Four Against Darkness Monster Cards Decks 1 and 2 Review

In this review, I will take a look at Monster Deck 1 and Monster Deck 2, add-ons for Four Against Darkness. Why do I say "add-ons?" Well, that's because you don't really need them to play but they do add a lot to the game by reducing the amount of dice rolling (still have to roll up dungeons, treasures, etc.). You simply pull a card for whatever you encounter; vermin, minions, weird monsters, and bosses. If this sounds interesting to you, then read on!

Twisted Dungeons a Four Against Darkness Supplement Review (Spoiler Free)

If you're like me, you like variety. Who doesn't? This is exactly what Twisted Dungeons adds. It does not necessarily give you a new mission other than slaying the final boss but it could. Maybe a town has hired your dungeon delvers to retrieve an item in a nearby dungeon. Your mage had a little too much booze at the local inn. That frozen dungeon looks a bit slippery, watch your step! You step into an old wizard's tower, what magical stuff could this hold? You keep looking for the final boss but he's no where to be found, maybe you can find some clues.

Four Against Darkness: Metalhoods Excellent Adventures Part 2

My second adventure with the "Metalhoods." This one was a bit more rough but I did complete it, woot! I actually played it over two days while my wife and son colored and then played with slime. Thankfully, the Metalhoods didn't run into any gelatinous cubes.

Four Against Darkness: Metalhoods Adventures Part 1

Four Against Darkness in all its splendor.

Four Against Darkness (4AD) is a fantasy dungeon crawler that probably doesn't need an introduction. I'm a little late to the party but hey, better than never. In 4AD you map out a dungeon as you adventure through it with a team of four characters chosen from eight different classes. There are a ton of other classes in other supplements, probably about a million of them. Ok, not that many but the game is well supported with many expansions both in the form of adventures and expanding on the base game.

Sellswords and Spellslingers: First Impressions

Last night for my "Friday Night Fights" I had a game of Sellswords and Spellslingers by Andrea Sfiligoi, the brilliance behind Song of Blades and Heroes. I had played it initially when I picked it up. It was still just called "Sellswords" at that point and there were some confusing explanations of the rules at that time. I tried a couple of games (my wife even played!) but just couldn't get the jest of it.

I finally got around to downloading the updated version and it's way more clear. So much so that I'd say it could be the first game I try with my son when he's old enough (counting the days!). Basically, you roll up to three D20 for activation, anything above eight is a successful action. Anything seven or below means you draw from the Event Deck. This usually means your going to activate monsters but there are other special cards that are actually a good thing.

Of course, your characters have traits that make them special. I like to build my characters in a role-playing fashion, i.e. if I have a thief, they're going to have thief-like traits. Probably why my thief died the second or so turn! I'll definitely have to practice at designing characters but this was just a test game anyway. You can gain experience and buy equipment with silver pieces that you accumulate along the way. You can get assorted useful items like potions and such.

With ten different scenarios, you can go on long campaigns and I'm sure it' easy enough to design your own with little trouble.

So far the game was super fun!

Below are some action shots during the game!

The Orc Fortress...A Song of Blades and Heroes Dungeon Crawl!!

Hail adventurers! Herein lies the account of another venture into the depths of a dungeon using the Song of Blades and Heroes rule set with the Song of Gold and Darkness dungeon crawl rules. As usual, I am using the fantastic fan-made expansion for SGD called Deep Dark Dungeons (DDD). Read on after the link if you're interested in seeing what happens! Plus, check out my custom-made orc dungeon table at the bottom! Enjoy and happy holidays!
Same composition as last time's party just different miniatures. Dwarf, Swordmage, Acrobat Thief, and Crusader. Maybe they'll have better luck!

Song of Blades and Heroes solitaire photo highlights, Orcs vs. Humans!

It's been a while! I've been meaning to get a blog post up and now I actually have some worthwhile content. I've played a couple solitaire games of Song of Blades and Heroes against, well, myself. Here's some highlights of a battle I fought with a raiding party of orcs and a detachment of knights with a wizard battling over a "Place of Power."...Also, I wanted to test out my new Black Friday deal camera, so here's a quick highlight reel!
The battling was fierce at this point, when I remembered "Hey, I've got a new camera to try out!" You can see casualties mounting off the table to the right.

The orcs get stuck in with a knight..The ever out of range (and out of focus!) wizard watches on.

The blue and red knight keeps the orcs at bay whilst the human leader (purple guy) and his trusty companion survey the fight.

The orc leader rallies his archers near the forest with shaman in tow.

Just showing off my scratch-built mausoleum, well, aside from the doors.

Finally, the wizard joins the fray attempting a transfix...The green knight steps up as the red/blue one gets pushed out of combat!

Both human and orc combatants are thrown to the ground as the orc leader engages the wizard, oh no!

I didn't get a pic of it but the next turn the axe-wielding human leader dealt the orcs a decisive blow when he charged the leader and cut him in two causing most of the orcs to flee and the rest to quit the field. See, he wasn't just hanging back to give orders, just waiting for the right moment to show the humans who's boss!

I really like playing Song of Blades and Heroes solo. Playing both sides can kind of seem drab in a lot of games but with the activation system in SOBAH, it keeps things tense. I just need to work on my skirmish tactics. Even playing alone I'm not that great!

Hopefully I'll get a bunch of pics of the plethora of new minis I've finished painting up. Happy holidays, folks!
