Warstuff, First Impressions

Warstuff is a completely genre neutral wargame for quick battles from OnePageRules under their "One Off" games section. You can play virtually anything with these rules. From dinosaurs to futuristic space battles, it can be done with just one page of rules. On the second page, it has unit creation rules with abilities. They are also free!

You can get the official rules or the proposed 2.2 rules, the latter of which I am using with the AI solo. All of these can be found on the forum post. Props to "rulebreaker" for coming up with these finely tuned rules.

This game is sort of like a stripped down Song of Blades and Heroes. There is just one stat, quality or Q. You roll at or above the models Q to succeed.

Let's take a look at these rules in action! I'll be using my Vikings and Irish to fight a Dark Age battle. I'm playing the Irish side. Since I'm using a smaller 3'x3' table than the suggested 4'x4', I'm increasing the Q levels of the soldiers by 1 step. So a basic human soldier is usually around Q5, thus I'm increasing it to Q4. Seems simple and more deadly. This will also reduce the number of models, which is always good when learning new games. I'll be going with the standard 150 point warband suggested in the rules.

All that is needed to play!

The Irish take up position in the trees and seize the first objective.

The Irish seize another objective but the vikings are in close proximity and that ends round 1.

The Irish draw first blood!

Next activation saw a one-two punch from the vikings on a stunned Irishman.

End of round 2.

Bad picture but the Irish leader falls!

End of round 3. Vikings control one objective, the other two are contested.

Vikings gain control of two objectives!

End of round 4, Vikings win!

The game took less than an hour to set up, play, take pics, and take down. Pretty quick with a satisfying conclusion. The AI is simple but effective with its decision tree. Next time I might try playing my entire 3'x4' map.

Thanks for reading!

  1. As a foreigner who has been playing with this rule for a long time, I think it's very good to see that the improved rule has been revised with considerable care. In the case of the improvement plan, which came out a few years ago, the advantage of being simple and easy to use originally disappeared because it was too large.
