Starport Scum: A Fistful of Sickness

Nordic Weasel 2016

I had a little game of Starport Scum yesterday while on the mend from being sick the last 10 days. Wouldn't recommend it...The being sick, not Starport Scum! It's the predecessor to 5 Parsecs From Home but way more sandboxy. If you want a great look under the hood, check out Docking Bay's fantastic write up on it.

First three are Laserburn and the last is a more recent Khurasan.

Anyhow, I threw together four figures for my crew. From left to right, there's a Goon, Ace, Hero, and another Ace. These are the games classes and allow them to do different things, typically rolling more dice and getting more traits and/or tags. I rolled up a mission, one of six possible jobs, and got "Law Enforcement."

"They'll never take us alive!" And those were his final words, after he was shot in the face.

Oh shoot...Need to Sharpie that pipe on the top!
These three goons were my target, particularly the guy on the top of the cargo crates. Goons are the lowest of the low, so was a pretty good starter game. It was a good way to get some of my 15mm Sci-Fi figures onto the table, as they have so much personality. The kids today would say they have "so much drip."

Here's my deployment. Did the standard random enemy deployment. I broke up the enemy base line into 3 sections, rolled a 1d3, and placed them into cover. Due to them being alert, I deployed first. The game was played on an oddball surface, 11" x 17"...It seemingly worked pretty well but would have been better if it was at least 2' x 2'. I just wanted to throw some stuff down on the table and have at it.
The marker indicates she's "pinned." Definitely needed some cover!

This Ace was actually taken out by a goon early on!

It was a fun little game. I was pretty much just testing out the mechanics and some of the campaign system. Next game I will add more melee guys, as it was purely a shoot out, which most Sci-Fi movies are like, I suppose. I could have knocked the "perp" out for a fistful of credits, the game's currency. Instead, everybody took cover and the pew pew started, which didn't end until the 5th turn. I gave myself a time limit and it was the last turn before I could get the target downed... Shame. 😊

Oh, speaking of the campaign rules, I have to rule for the downed Ace and take 2 loot rolls for my successful mission.

First, I see if my Ace survives...I rolled a 1...Well, it was nice knowing him. *Salute* Needed a 3+ to survive.

Now the loot: I rolled a Stealth Cloak and a Dueling Pistol...Nice!

QRS, Dice, Counters, and Ruler and you're on you way to the stars!

Note: I had forgotten where I got the name for this blog. It stemmed from "A Fistful of Credits," which is the currency in this game. Go figure!
