Bennar Flamebeard - Talomir Tales Part 1

Bennar Flamebeard belongs to a proud lineage of warriors, knights, and paladins. An only child, he looks to continue on his family's honorable name. However, it has been tarnished by a recent incident between a rival clan of dwarfs, the Ungarts. Framed and cast out by the church he so faithfully protected, he seeks to redeem the Flamebeard's name and have his banner raised again in the church.

Bennar strolled into the town of Freywolf, which is situation in the country of Tereken. The dwarf had a chip on his shoulder as he did not take his disgraced name lightly. He looked around for the nearest tavern. His eyes came upon a swinging sign named "The Jovial Mugs." It had two mugs toasting together with beer flowing out. "This'll do!" he said to no one in particular, banging open the door and taking the first stool.

The tender came over and sat down a mug of ale. Bennar inquired if there were any dangerous jobs to be done in the city. The man at the bar nodded and pointed at the post board. The dwarf casually stepped up to the board and perused the papers nailed to it. "No, nope, hmmmm...Not dangerous enough. Ah, here we go." He ripped a piece of paper off. It read "Urgent! Need someone to protect my shop, the Smelly Stallion. Serious inquiries only! -Svensworth."

Later that night, Bennar took the paper to the man named Svensworth. The dwarf agreed to watch over the shop that night. Sven, as he preferred to be called, was quite impressed that a paladin of the God Ogroth would be the one to take the job. Nevertheless, Sven bid him good luck and strode off to his home.

It was a long, cool night. Mostly the paladin prayed to Ogroth or practiced some drills. Currently, he was quite hungry so produced some salted pork from a pouch on his belt. After finishing, he took a swig of ale from his flask. The dwarf looked around, the hair on his neck stood on end. He was being watched.

As smooth as silk, an shadowy figure dropped from the rooftop and sliced in between a chink in the dwarf's armor. He was nearly slain, if it wasn't for his resiliency to wounds. Bennar quickly whirled on his opponent, giving a glancing blow for the cut. The two men fought, steel against steel until, finally, the dwarf and pummeled the thief with his warhammer. The thief lie dead and Ben wounded.

As dawn set in, Sven came back to see if the dwarf had any trouble. He eyed the thief's body and snorted. "Filth!" The dwarf and man exchanged pleasantries. Sven handed over the payment for Bennar's services.

I think "guarding a location" is the best for new characters. Pretty easy but in this case, Bennar would have been Out of the Fight if it wasn't for him being a dwarf. He and the thief had a nice and tense fight with the thief dropping to 2 rep and Ben to 3 rep.

I ended up with a total of 6 increasing d6 rep and no decreasing rep d6. I decided I would boost Ben's people skill. Being a dwarf it started out at 3 but raised to 4 after the encounter. I then decided to convert my remaining increasing rep d6 into trade goods. Next time I will have to go trading!
